Five tips for successful IT chargeback strategies

Gartner has recommend five tips for successful IT chargeback strategies:
1. Be open and transparent about the charges for IT.

2. Balance the four issues of ability to pay, transfer pricing regulations, strategic goals, and profit and loss responsibility.

3. When chargeback issues arrive, determine the root cause of the problem. Do not assume the chargeback model is . awed just because stakeholders complain. A e cause of the con. ict is usually not the chargeback model, but rather a distrust of IT, perceived fairness, cost/value, strategy, or a political issue.

Five Fundamentals of Information Resource Management

1. Information Management.

Information is valuable and must be managed as such. In many organizations, information does not appear on the balance sheet or asset register and is thus seen as something that, while important, is not really valuable.

2. Technology Management.

Technology Management addresses the whole aspect of the value of technology to the firm. This includes the impact and effect on other resources as well as the gaining of strategic advantage by judicious use of the appropriate technology.

3. Distributed Management.

Where systems are located can have a significant impact on systems effectiveness as well as internal control and thought must be given to the maintaining of an adequate system of managerial control.

Four business process re-engineering strategic motivation

Indications for re-engineering
- Outgrowing capacity
- Value added versus revenue
Under this motivation the major success factor may be the speed of automation and the primary focus is the core operation of the organization with the intention being "Don't Automate Obliterate"

Elimination of Competitive Disadvantage as a Motivation
Indications for re-engineering
- Losing market share
- Performance lag

Top 5 tips for successful Zero Failure Policy

1. Eliminate the Problem, Not the Error
A company providing backup services for its customers established a zero error policy towards backups, promising customers that their backups would be error free. Unfortunately, the way in which “error free” was achieved was less than desirable. Instead of determining the nature of each error, steps were taken to simply eliminate the error. For example, whenever a file was reported as being inaccessible during backup due to it being opened, the administrator simply added that file to the list of files to be excluded during backups. For at least one server this was a disaster, as the host was a Web server that kept files opened for a period of time after they had been accessed by users. This resulted in a server that could not be restored when it failed, as critical files were deliberately excluded from the backup process as a means of reducing the errors involved in backup

2. Focus on improvement
Always record carefully every day to day activity and make sure that every action is remediated and logged properly.
